I see lots of couples in my practice. One of the first interventions I do is to have the couple list all of the ways they avoid eachother. Almost always the top three consist of email, social media, and texting: in other words, the phone.
This article suggests what we're probably all thinking; that the phone has become an addiction. Research shows that we are checking our phones on average 50- 300 times a day. We can now compare our phones to slot machines or alcohol in terms of addiction.
My favorite part of this article is the idea that our phone usage requires mindfulness. It is likely a good idea to try a 24 hour phone detox every week to reset, reconnect, and attune to one another.
